Are you tired of categories, divisions, groups, sects, cliques, us, we, them, they, liberal, straight, spiritual, hip, conservative,
unspiritual, secular ... well if you are, aren't, or even if you've never thought about it. C'mon!
Tonight some people will be on a stage in the fieldhouse, singing and telling you about their lives. Milny of the songs
they'll sing are about life; this experience that all of us are in together. All of these people know Jesus Christ and have found
Him to be the center, the meaning, and the perimeter of this experience. They aren't perfect people or holy people, but just
human beings who want to give to you and take from you.
This concert isn't just for Christians or just for non- Christians. God's so big he's got something for everybody. The evening
will be what we let it be.
These people are divided into five groups: I) the Hodos, 2) Dan Mogck and Tom Howard, 3) the Man, 4) J. and Gail
Caress, and 5) Praise. However, it's not guaranteed that they will stay that way the whole evening. There 's another group
which will be there and that is Fish Services. They will have with them all sorts of hand-made wares and if you give them some
money they will give you something you like. Then they will trade your money for something such as a surgical instrument
for a missionary doctor in Africa or paint for a bookstore in London.
Another group that you've thought a lot about, seen a lot of, and know quite well is YOU. The imaginary barbed
wire fences and stone walls that line some stages will be forbidden tonight. Who are you anyway? The mikes will be open
between songs and groups. Will you?
If you're honestly poor, come with dignity anyway. If you can spare $1 there will be a chance to donate it. If you're
dishonestly poor, sneak in and no one will notice unless you have shifty eyes.
God promised us he'd make it, too, over in Matthew 18:20. So, c'mon children, Jesus gonna' make you well.

FRIENDS
Real friends are those who, when you've made a
fool of yourself, don't feel that you've done a
permanent job.
The only way to destroy an enemy, is to make
him your friend.
We too often love things and use people when we
should be using things and loving people.
Practice what you
preach, if not,
don't preach
by AI Cooper
Just the other day I was sitting thinking about what has
happened over this last semester. One thing in particular
came to mind and that is just how much people at Bethel
don't get involved. Recently a bill was passed in Student
Senate concerning life style. The bill proposes that anyone
not living in accordance with the present Bethel lifestyle
should not be allowed to return to Bethel next year. If the
not living in accordance with the present Bethel life style
should be changed in order to make these people fit. I had
a number of people come to me complaining about the bill in
one way or another. However, whenever I suggested that
they get organized and do something about this bill, they became
silent, changed the conversation, or simply walked away.
The life style is only one issue. I use it as an example
because it is one issue with which we can all identify in one
way or another. Life style isn't the issue, the real issue is
non-involvement. We're all aware just how much complaining
is done here at Bethel, about life style, food service, the
social life, etc. We all complain, but how many of us do anything
more than that? Too many of us only verbalize what
should be done, hoping that someone else will do the dirty
work!
Very few people here at Bethel are willing to stick out
their necks to try to get something done. Too many of us
hide behind the door. What is wrong with us? Why are we
so eager to complain? This year is almost over. We have
missed a lot of opportunities. It's too late. However, we still
have next year. By the looks of things we have a good and
excited Senate this year. They seem anxious to get things
done. They don't need someone to complain about and to
them, they need support and help. It all seems to come back
to the old saying - practice what you preach and if you're
not willing to practice, then don't preach.

Alone
Hundreds of people around,
yet,
Alone
People going here and there,
laughing,
talking,
enjoying,
yet,
Alone.
Doesn't anyone see me
or am I imagining this, of beingAlone.
If I was with the people
would I see the person who is
Alone?
Are people blinded by life, or
do we all have such important
things to do that we can't see the people
who are ...
Alone.
People say Hi! without a glance, or
even a flicker of my presence.
They didn't notice that I wanted to talk,
that's ok, when

no one to gain.

Hopes high
for new senate
by Dave' Gustafson
Our thirteenth session of Student Senate
this past year has produced diverse
feelings among its members and among
fellow Bethelites as well. The need for a
Student Association is evident, but the
animosity isn't. Now as a May 28th graduating
senior, concerned Bethelite, and
Senator-at-Large, I feel as if some of my
fellow senators have become apathetic
towards Bethel and the voice which they
could have if only partial initiative
was established.
As our "big" move comes closer to
reality on the new campus, we begin
immediately to see the great influence
the Student Association will have upon
Bethel. In essence, Bethel's Student
Association will have a "new start" to
prove itself to the administration and
student body.
It becomes apparent that campaign
promises will either be inacted or fall to
the wayside with hopes of some passerby
reviving the issue with new promises.
An old expression of "Time will tell"
becomes inclusive and Bethel's "community"
will have an inclination of further
policy by its present Student Association.
Many Bethelites feel that our
administration is "incoherent" or "incompatible"
with our Senate community,
but this happens only when communi,
cation barriers are erected against one
or the other. Our independence from the
administration will never develop. This
is not what we want, for without the
administration, Bethel's Student Senate
is without existence! In all actuality
Bethel's administration gives the Student
Association over $27,000 a year to run
its "organization."
Our Christian views must enter into
play if "power" is what we're after.
There is nothing wrong with power, if
power is used correctly. But we must
proceed with love! One of the recurring
problems of history is the supposed incompatibility
of love and power. They
have usually been contrasted as opposites
- polar opposites - so that love
is identified with a resignation of power,
and power with a denial of love. But I
believe that love and power are truly
compatible when viewed in their proper
perspectives. Thus by proceeding
through proper channels, in love, the
power which our Student Senate desires
will develop.
Many improvements or changes were
made during the Thirteenth Senate, but
the Fourteenth Senate has a much larger
job ahead of itself. The only way anyone
may improve or change a said ex-istin
gstandard is to get involved. Immerse
yourself in Student Senate!
We are "lucky" to have an institution
such as Bethel! Our freedoms are
many and our voice is large. Compared
to other Christian colleges, Bethel's
real value can be seen. We have been
blessed greatly and should be proud of
the opportunity which God has provided
us through means of attendance.
Don't become apathetic, get involved
and put forth some initiative, it's up to
you!
Male Chorus
tours Rockford,
sets for Europe
by Bob Bryant
Four nights, five days, six concerts.
That hardly sounds like a choir tour.
But, that is just what the Male Chorus
had this month. The men boarded their
Greyhound, the new guys met George,
and tour got under way at 11:30, Friday,
April 14. They got back six concerts
richer and several hours of sleep
poorer, at 11 p.m. the following Tuesday.
What's it like to tour with the
Male Chorus?
"Lead on, Oh King Eternal! .. Lead on,
Oh God of Might!!!!"
The fifty-eight rank pipe organ in the
fantastic two and one-half million dollar
Rockford Covenant Church.
Ross - "Psyche-up, guys." Before,
during, and after each number.)
"Now, we'll break up into groups of
four to six for the next ten minutes
before our concert starts, and talk to
God." (This gave the group a sense of
unity and of oneness with God, giving
new meaning to the traditional time of
devotions before each concert.)
"My God, I love thee; ...
Solely because thou art my God
And my eternal King."
"Did you see that guy, George? He
had his insurance card out before you
were half way through that turn!"
"Spirit of God, Descend upon my heart.
Wean it from earth, through all it?
pulses move."
Where's Dan (Wickman)? We want
him, as a former member, to join our
first tenors for the next three numbers.
You remember them, don't you?"
"I'm gonna ride in the chariot to
see my Lord!"
"Riser crew one is on tonight."
"Go inside, downstairs to your left,
through the double doors, through the
large room ,into the smaller room where
the tables are, down the narrow hallway,
up the center stairway in the back to the
first landing, turn to your left, then
right, then left, and it's the third door
on your right after the second pink one
on your left, - that's the room where
we can leave all our luggage and change.
It's easy to get to - you can't miss it."
"My name is Chuck Lindquist, I'm a
senior at Bethel from Mora, Minnesota ..
and looking out over the audience tonight,
I see there are some children who
might be interested in coming to Bethel,
so I thought I'd tell you just a little
about our school ... "
"Tonight, the ends will lead in, down
the center aisle, go around the piano
and the side pews, onto the platform,
criss-cross in the middle, then turn
around three times, and go on to the
risers. It's easy, so we don't need to
practice it."
"A cheerful green adorns the scene
of laughing hills and valleys;"
"When do we eat?"
"Tachtfermaten, den var richtig gudt."
"Devotions where we ate at 7:40,
concert at 8:00."
"Any further instructions, Kent?"
"Hey, George, Bubba's in the john.
You know how to drive now - hang a
hard left!"
"Ken had to go to Rockford to see
his draft board?????!!?"
"Mr. and Mrs. Bray - Bruce and
Pete. Mr. and Mrs. Bone Bryant
and Bob."
"Tak far roser navid vagen, tak far
tornet ibland dem ...
Thanks for joy and thanks for sorrow,
thanks for heavenly peace with thee."
"Contrary to what some of you are
thinking, these guys aren't just saving
money to go to Europe by not getting
haircuts!"
That's what it's all about. Praising
God, goofing off, eight hours in a
thirty-nine passenger Greyhound, thirtytwo
men joined by the common bond of
Christ, singing and speaking for Him.
But it's not all over. On May 29, the
Male Chorus will again be leaving on
tour - this time a thirty-five day,
thirty-three concert tour of five European
countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark,
Germany, and England.) The short
tour to Illinois was a time to get to
know each other and gain valuable experience
for what is to come. At this
time, all but two concerts have been set,
and the final payment has been made,
Dr. Smith and the Male Chorus are excited
and prayerfully expectant. God is
at work already, preparing the hearts
and lives of people over there. Last
time, we watched flickerings of the
Spirit's moving. We have been hearing
reports that fires are now burning.
Tour is fun, it's exciting, but it's

Tomorrow, Bethel's baseball team will
find itself pitted against the Northwestern
Iowa squad. Bethel needs a sweep
of this doubleheader to maintain any
chance of capturing the Tri-State Conference
title. In four conference games
thus far, the Royals have looked smooth
and capable in winning two of them and
over-powered and helpless in losing
two.
Perhaps a recap of the recent action
would be in order. Last Saturday's twin
bill with Sioux Falls was postponed because
of rain and wet grounds. The date
for making up these important conference
contests is not as yet set.
Thursday of last week found the team
traveling to Albert Lea for two with Lea
College. In the first game, things seemed
to be in order for the Royals as they
turned out a 4-2 victory. Their old
enemy, errors, was not present in full
force like it has been in so many of
the games this year and last. There were
only six hits, and six different ballplayers
collected hits. The big difference
in this game was consistency in the
field. Don Paterson picked up the victory,
which evened his record for the
year at 2-2. Roger Jahn came on in
relief and picked up the save.
In the second game, the Royals ran up
against one of the toughest pitchers
they've had to face this season. They
made a noble effort, and with half an
inning to go in the game, the batmen
found themselves with a one run lead
and three outs away from a sweep of
the twin bill. Roger Jahn, pitching again
in relief, got the first man out, but af-

much more. It is a time to learn how
to live in close quarters with a large
group for a long time, and a time to
draw closer to God. It's God working
through you, in the lives of others, and
in a different way.
Perhaps the whole feeling of the
chorus was summed up during the bus
trip home from Red Wing, where we
had our last concert of the tour. We started
singing - hymns, folk songs, songs
from our repertoire, and gospel songs.
At one point, we sang "Pass It On,"
followed by "We Are One In The Spirit,
We Are One In The Lord." One member
remarked, "That sums up all we
sing about!" And it does.
four
ter that things seemed to fall apart.
Several key errors plus some erratic
pitching put the Royals on the shortend
of a 6-5 score.
With a 4-6 record, Bethel now faces
the second half of their season. Remaining
are six conference games plus several
non-conference tilts. What remains
by Dave Shaw
In last Saturday's Bethel Relays, the
Bethel Royals track team displayed one
of their strongest efforts this season
as they grabbed first place ribbons in
five events and piled up 66 points, finishing
second in a field of eight schools.
Meet records were broken and three
were equalled. Bethel set one of the
new records with a time of 3:31 in the
Sprint Medley Relay, bettering the previous
meet record by more than two
seconds. Records also fell in the high
jump, two mile run, 360 yard low
hurdles, the discus, the shotput, and the
javelin throw. Existing records in
the pole vault, 100 yard dash, and 120
yard high hurdles were tied.
Bethel also picked up firsts in the
440 yard relay, the 880 relay, the mile
relay, and the long jump. In the long
jump, Jim Hammer and Harley Turner
combined jumps of 21' 6 3/4" and
20' 5" respectively to edge out Concordit
Moorhead. Hammer and Turner also
ran on the 440 and 880 yard relay teams
along with Dave Asp and Phil James.
James ran a blistering anchor in both
events and provided the crowd with two
spectacular come-from-behind finishes.
James also anchored the mile relay team
of Dave Asp, Don Reed, and Steve Whittaker
and held off a late challenge from
a strong St. John's relay team.
Other Royals who placed in the Relays
were Rock Henrickson and Phil Swanson,
whose combined distances in that
event were good enough for third place.
The distance medley relay team of Dennis
Renander, Don Reed, Paul Loth, and
John Peterson picked up a fourth place
spot, as did Hammer and Turner in the
triple jump, and Gary Hipp in the 120
yard high hurdles. Hipp turned in his
best time ever as a Royal as he ran his
event in 15.4 seconds.
to be seen is, can Bethel avoid their old
bug-a-boo of fielding mistakes and play
some consistent baseball? The Royals
have plenty of potential with all of the
necessary ingredients for a fine finish
in the Tri-State Conference. Let's hope
they can put it all together for the rest
of the year.
: .0.
.... \ . -.
Even the Concordia Moorhead coach
noted an improvement in the Royals'
performance as he stated, "Last Saturday
our teams seemed to be about even,
but the Royals showed me a lot more today
than they did last Saturday."
Obviously, the lack of strength in the
field events is what hurt Bethel the
most. The Royals were without a point
in the pole vault, the discus, the shotput,
or the high jump, while 40 of
their pointS' came from the efforts of
the relay teams.
St. John's repeated their performance
of last year as they won the Relays with
101 points. Second place went to Bethel,
whose 66 points were enough to get by
Hamline with 65 and Gustavus Adolphus
with 63. Other schools in competition
were Macalester with 59, Concordia
Moorhead with 45, and Augsburg with
38. Concordia St. Paul failed to score.
When asked for his ideas on the
Relays, Harley Turner commented that
he felt the team "rose to the occasion
and produced a good all-around effort."
He added that "James (Phil) was fantastic,"
and mentioned that Coach Glader
did a fine job in getting the team
psyched for the Relays.
With less than two weeks left in the
track season, Bethel's next meet is at
Central High School in a triangular
with Superior State and Concordia
St. Paul on May 2. The time of the meet
is 4 p.m.
