Biographical Information for G. Arvid Hagstrom

G. Arvid Hagstrom was Bethel’s first president and the leader who changed a Swedish immigrant school into an American educational institution. He was the last major leader of Bethel who was a citizen of Sweden and the first leader to grow up in America. Hagstrom was chosen as president in a 1913 meeting of the Conference when it was decided that the seminary would move from Chicago to St. Paul and become one institution with Bethel Academy, a Swedish language high school begun in 1905. By November 1914, the new seminary building was ready for occupancy on Snelling Avenue. Two years later, the academy building was ready and the two schools joined together on one campus. Hagstrom launched Bethel Junior College in 1931 and announced the beginning of a phase-out of the academy. The last academy class graduated in 1936. In 1941, after twenty seven years at the helm, Hagstrom stepped down as President having turned a small immigrant school into an enduring American educational institution.
